About Pallets

Last Updated November 2nd, 2020

A pallet, sometimes inaccurately referred to as a skid (a skid has no bottom deck boards), is a flat transport structure that supports goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift, pallet jack, front loader, or other device. A pallet is the structural foundation for unit loads which allows handling and storage efficiencies. Goods or shipping containers are sometimes placed on a pallet secured with strapping, stretch wrap or shrink wrap and shipped.

Pallets may be constructed from both hardwoods and softwoods. There are countless different lengths and widths and different numbers of cross-boards, but pallets usually fall into one of three styles of construction:

Block Pallet

2 Way Stringer Pallet

Block Pallet

4 Way Stringer Pallet

Options for Reuse:

There is an existing pallet remanufacturing industry that provides for significant reuse of pallets.  For those which are too damaged to be remanufactured, Recycling and Waste to Energy are an option.
