About Softwood

Last Updated November 2nd, 2020

Softwood is wood from conifers and is the source of about 80% of the world's production of timber. Softwood trees are characterized by needle-like leaves, scaly cones - inside which seeds are produced, and green foliage throughout the year. The term is opposed to hardwood, although softwoods are not necessarily softer than hardwoods. In both groups there is an enormous variation in actual wood hardness, with the range in density in hardwoods completely including that of softwoods.
