Building deconstruction is the systematic disassembly of a building (typically wood-framed) that maximizes the recovery and reuse of materials and components. Deconstruction takes place before or instead of building demolition and unlike demolition practices that mechanically reduce a building’s volume for recycling or landfilling, the goal of deconstruction is to salvage for reuse the lumber, doors, windows, and other materials that can be used again in new construction or remodeling.
Many opportunities and options exist to salvage and reuse wood building materials from building deconstruction. Framing lumber and timber, wood doors, wood windows, wood flooring, wood cabinets, and solid and plywood sheathing are available from the thousands of wood-framed buildings removed or renovated each year. Deconstruction and building material reuse organizations can be found in many communities. See below for businesses in your region that provide deconstruction services.
