About Wood Doors

Last Updated November 2nd, 2020

Exterior or interior doors may be constructed using solid wood or engineered wood typically hardboard, plywood, particleboard, and/or veneers.

Common Examples:

Panel Doors - These solid wood doors feature a frame of full thickness wood, typically 1.5-2.5", surrounding a panel of solid wood that is only 1/4 - 3/8" thick. The panels may have a vertical or horizontal orientation, and the number of panels becomes the descriptor, such as a 5 panel door.

Hollow Core Doors - This door has two large sheets of veneer (less than 1/8" thick) attached to one another with 1" spacers. These spacers are the only "fill" inside the door, hence the title "hollow core". These are frequently found as interior residential doors.

Solid Core Doors - This door is identical to the hollow core door, except the two outer sheets of veneer surround a solid core of engineered wood, typically hardboard (masonite) or particleboard. These weighty doors are most often found in commercial spaces, or residential exterior doors.

Options for Reuse:

Doors are one of the most commonly salvaged and sold products within the reuse world. In addition to reusing them as-is, there are also many upcycling options for doors, such as wall paneling, headboards, tabletops, etc.

Units of Measure:

Doors are measured according to their height and width, and occasionally thickness. Pre-hung doors will also list whether they have a right hand or left hand swing.
