About Barn Wood

Last Updated October 9th, 2020

This is wood that has been used as an exterior siding material on a barn, often featuring extensive weathering and sometimes remnants of the distinctive red paint.

Options for Reuse:

There is an extremely well developed market for reclaimed barn wood, especially in the area of consumer goods, such as picture frames, vanities and tabletops made of reclaimed wood.  As the aesthetic has become popular, there are many manufacturers who produce the "look" of weathered barnwood by using paints and solvents on virgin materials.

In addition to the marketplace for added value and woodworking items created with barn wood, there is also an active market for as-is doors and even full buildings to be purchased and relocated.

Applicable Units:

Barn wood siding is measured in board feet, and is typically has a thickness of less than 1.5".  The widths and lengths of barn siding vary greatly, as they were often sourced from the most convenient local resource rather than formally milled and graded lumber.
