About ​​AIA Materials Pledge

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Materials Pledge encourages the use of salvaged and recycled materials to support a circular economy.
The pledge also aims to improve the health of people and the environment. 

 

The pledge encourages the use of salvaged materials:

  1. Advocate for reuse: Encourage clients to reuse existing buildings and salvaged materials

  2. Design for disassembly: Design new buildings to be easily disassembled and reused in the future

  3. Reduce construction waste: Consider modular design and off-site construction

  4. Select recyclable materials: Choose materials that can be recycled into the same type of material

 

Other pledge goals:

  1. Use materials that support life throughout their life cycles

  2. Eliminate hazardous substances

  3. Choose products from manufacturers that secure human rights

  4. Choose products that support and regenerate natural cycles of life

  5. Choose products that reduce carbon emissions
