World Vision started The Storehouse model in 1995. It stemmed from an idea from a Chicago builder who always had lots of new materials left over from large construction jobs. He also had a heart for the less fortunate in the inner city and wondered how he could put those two things together. A partnership was developed with World Vision in Chicago, which procured a small warehouse and came up with “The Storehouse” name. The first managers of The Storehouse developed a plan to contact manufacturers in the building products industries to obtain discontinued products, overstocks, and other surplus merchandise to get it into the hands of people in the impoverished areas of the inner city to help improve their homes, churches, schools, and facilities.
